Short answer: per the CRA 2027 deadlines fact sheet, if you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on business in 2026 and the expenditures made in the course of carrying on that business were primarily the cost or capital cost of tax shelter investments, the filing deadline is 30 April 2027, not 15 June 2027.
What this changes
- Filing deadline: 30 April 2027 (a Friday).
- Payment deadline: 30 April 2027, the same as for other self-employed individuals.
So the exception removes the two extra months to file.
What this page does not decide
The CRA describes a tax shelter as an investment that, based on statements, representations or promotional literature, can reasonably be expected to give you federal tax credits, or a combination of credits and losses or deductions, equal to or greater than your net cost in any of the first four years (CRA, Tax shelter). Whether your expenditures were "primarily" the cost or capital cost of such investments is not defined on the pages we read; ask a professional or the CRA. The 2027 fact sheet itself does not define these terms.
Practical checklist
- Identify whether your 2026 business expenses were mainly tax shelter investments.
- If unsure, plan for 30 April for everything.
- Do not rely on 15 June until the question is settled.
